Disk formatting is the process in which a new disk medium is fully prepared to store files. The Windows OS just erases entire bookkeeping information from the disk when you format the disk and creates internal address tables that are used to locate information for later added data. You can perform Quick Format as well as Full Format to erase the complete data from hard disk drive. Quick formatting erases the hard disk drives metadata and file allocation tables and it hardly take few minutes where as Full formatting goes sector-by-sector across the disk and erases it. It takes hours together. You might need to format a hard drive if you are installing an operating system for the first time, trying to get rid of viruses, cleaning your hard drive to sell your computer, removing errors from your hard drive, etc. However, in case by mistake, if you have formatted your drive then you need to recover deleted files from formatted hard drive to recover all your files back. You can do this by using file recovery software like “Remo Recover (Windows) Pro Edition” which is one of the most powerful third party utility to retrieve files after formatting the storage medium.

If you click on that, you will get “Quick format” as an option and if you click “Start”, it will format the drive. You can also format particular drive using “format” command, which is a Microsoft DOS command. The syntax is: format drive: [/parameters] for example:
format C: /s, this command will copy system files to the formatted disk.
Format C: /q, this command will perform Quick formatting.
